8 Sleeping Positions & Their Effects On Health


In what position do you sleep most often? It turns out this is a very important question. Getting enough sleep is the most important thing – but did you know that how you sleep can also impact your health? 

Sleeping on your back with your arms at your side is generally considered to be the best sleeping position for spine health and it's good for your neck too, as long as you don't use too many pillows. 

That said, back sleepers tend to snore more than those in any other position and sleep apnea is strongly associated with sleeping on the back. 

Let's take a look at eight common sleeping positions and what they do to your body.


  1. No mention of having a good Bed! That makes a HUGE difference. I sleep on my Back and both my sides. I am all over the place when I sleep and wake up all night long. On good days I get a full 6 hours sleep. Most days I am lucky if I get a good 4 hours of sleep with no interruptions.

    1. No mention of a good bed because this article isn't about the bed. Did you not comprehend that? Having a good high quality mattress is a given for a good night sleep.

  2. I sleep with my legs to my side and but my body is straight on my back... D:

  3. So what I take away is: Unless I sleep standing on my head, I've got a personality disorder.

  4. I sleep on my back, with no pillow and generally sleep wonderfully.

    If people sleep on their back without a pillow, then they do snore more -- you're restricting your throat.

    If people find this uncomfortable it's likely they're just not used to stretching out their neck or they have shoulders that are tight - so just means working on these issues, so eventually no pillow on back sleeping is fully comfortable.
